Limerick

Limerick

Taken fro Wikipedia: A limerick is a short, humorous, often ribald or nonsense poem, especially one in five-line anapestic or amphibrachic meter with a strict rhyme scheme (AABBA), which is sometimes obscene with humorous intent. The form can be found in England as of the early years of the 18th century. It was popularized by Edward Lear in the 19th century, although he did not use the term.

The following limerick is of unknown origin:

The limerick packs laughs anatomical

In space that is quite economical.

But the good ones I've seen

So seldom are clean

And the clean ones so seldom are comical.

Anyone have any nonsensical Limericks??

  1. For some reason limericks always remind me of elementary school. Maybe because our teachers had us write them every year on St. Patrick's day.

  2. I love limericks. And of course the county of Limerick in Ireland is awesome as well. I always think of the one, "There once was a man from Nantucket..." Doh!

  6. Thanks for coming to visit me. I have tried my hand at writing a limerick, but I do have to say they are terrible

  7. Here is the most memorable limerick I have read, and yes, it's a bit dirty. I read it in a grafitti book.

There once was a man named Sweeney
Who spilled some gin on his weenie
    and just to be couth
    he added vermouth
and slipped his wife a martini.

  8. The word alone makes me smile. On television shows they always stop it after the first line so we never get to hear the rest.

  11. loved the limerick, Cathy. Great post.
The one from Bridget Jone's Diary just popped into my mind...it's better it stays there since Hugh Grant said it, so you know his mouth needs a clean out and then some bleach :)

  12. I always got a kick out of Edward Lear and his limericks. Here's one that makes absolutely no sense, but then most of them don't. Just fun and often a tad naughty.

There was a Young Lady of Norway,
    Who casually sat on a doorway;
When the door squeezed her flat,
    She exclaimed, 'What of that?'
This courageous Young Lady of Norway.

  13. I can't think of any off the top of my head but limericks always make me laugh. It sounds crazy but I even just like the word limerick, it's such a fun sounding word.
Hope you're enjoying your weekend, Cathrina! :)

  14. It's funny you've chosen limericks for L - I couldn't think of an E topic so searched 'e is for' and the top two responses were 'elephants' and 'estranged'. So I made up a limerick:

There once was a pachyderm from Fife
    Whose snoring offended his wife
    He tried to atone
    By sleeping alone
But she killed him that night with a knife

  17. I don't know any others off the top of my head, but I did try my hand at writing them during our poetry unit in middle school! (The lame clean ones, of course :) )

  18. Hey Cathrina! I wrote a limerick for my day L. http://adventuresintheballpark.blogspot.com/2013/04/limerick.html

I have a category of them, in fact. I'm not a poetry fan, but I enjoy limericks. :-) Probably because silly and transparent. Thanks for popping by my blog earlier. :-) The a-z is beginning to wear me down. I'm up too many late night reading blogs!
