@TheIWSG #IWSG #writingcommunity #WritersSupportGroup #writerslife

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter is @TheIWSG and hashtag #IWSG.

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG Day post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say. Remember, the question is optional!!

April 1 question - If you have a playlist (or could put one together) that either gets you in the groove to write or fits with one of your books, what is it? What type of music or what songs?

I love music, however, I can't write and listen to music at the same time. The songs that I love tends to bring back memories and takes me on some wild rides.

April is the ideal time to refresh goals and turn small daily actions into major wins, utilizing the season's new energy for growth.

  5. Love those quotes! I can't write and listen to anything either. The voices in my head are far too loud and easily distracted. They could erupt into a dance party if I don't keep some peace!

  6. Often those memories are what helps me move the story forward.

  7. I get that. Music can be hugely distracting for me too, but also can help get me in the mood -- just to begin.

I'm glad you jumped on the IWSG pannel and I've been following your release news! Super awesome stuff. Keep banging down doors and killing it, eh?

  8. I'm like you, I can't listen to music directly when writing. I get too involved in it also. Congrats on your admin role!

  9. I don't listen to music while I write for the same reason. There are very few songs that I've heard that I feel portray my stories and I always find them after the story is done.

  11. Thanks for co-hosting! I only listen if I need a boost to get me started, but I mostly like to work in silence if everything is going well.

  12. Hi Constantine,
Congratulations on joining the IWSG and thank you for being one of co-host for this month.
I enjoy listening to my own set lists but there are also times when I write in silence too. I would say I enjoy writing in both scenes.

  13. Thank you for co-hosting IWSG this month. I agree that music can be distracting when writing, but inspiring when not writing!

  14. I'm like you. Can't write and listen at the same time. It might be the age thing, because many youngsters nowadays often listen to their phone simultaneously with doing everything else. Maybe you need to train for it since babyhood?

    1. hahaaaa. My grandson loves to say he's multi-tasking. Playing a video game while watching a family movie. Train 'em young.

  15. I listen to music all day, every day. The only thing that changes when I'm writing is the style of music. I just keep it low so as not to disturb the voices in my head ;-) Thanks for co-hosting and happy April!

  16. I hadn't thought of that, the way music reminds me of people and times past as well. Good point, Cathrina. I recall reading George Saunders saying, 'that in the course of writing, he (Tolstoy) was listening to another voice other than that of his personal moral conviction. He was listening to what I would like to call the wisdom of the novel.' How can you hear the wisdom and listen to a music track at the same time? It doesn't work for me.

  17. I write in silence. I really wish I could go to the coffee shop and write, but that environment is way too distracting for me. As far as music goes, I would recognize the song and go off to find out the name of the song or who is singing. Thank you for co-hosting@

  18. We are on the same page, Cathrina. No music while witing for me either.

  19. Congratulations on your new position as IWSG Admin and thanks for co-hosting!
For me, music inspires and changes my mood. When I get down to writing, I have to turn the music off.

  20. Yes, this is why I can't listen to music and write ; too many memories, or I want to get up and dance. Thanks for joining the IWSG team!

  22. Thanks for co-hosting this month!
I’m the opposite. With a playlist playing in the background, it doesn’t hinder my writing. Instead of going down memory lane, it helps me focus more on my WIP.

  24. Thanks for co-hosting! I can't write with music either--at least not music with lyrics. Too distracting.

  25. I can't listen to music when I write either, Cathrina. I need silence in order to concentrate. And yes! Writing IS holding your breath under water. Have a great day!
