July 2 question:
Is there a genre you haven't tried writing in yet that you really want to try? If so, do you plan on trying it?
When I had an agent, she encouraged me to write magical realism. I tried and failed miserably. However, I do like to write different genres: My books consist of Christian, Fantasy, Dystopian, Mystery, Psychological Thriller, and Contemporary.

I don't think I could do magical realism either. Cool your books have Christian elements though.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI've never written magical realism and I am quite sure that I would bomb out in that genre.
Thank you for co-hosting.
Shalom shalom
I love the breadth of your work! I think you're doing great. Magical Realism would be tough for me too - it's such a small niche.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting and Happy Fourth of July!
Is that all? And why not add another couple genres? LOL.
ReplyDeleteTry and fail and I think that's always a good way to know whether you want to write certain genres. I never do like reading magical realism but that's a perference.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog. Have a lovely day.
I say, write what you like. Thank you for co-hosting today.
ReplyDeleteTrying different genres can be fun and challenging, like stretching the creative muscles. It sounds like you’ve tried quite a few!
ReplyDeleteThank you for including those links to IWSG books. Both appeal to my weaknesses! And I'm wondering what genres you might like to try. . .
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, what a special gift of imagination you have and the ability to write great books in so many different genres. Thanks for co-hosting this month.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a mix of genres already! I hope one appealed more than the others.
ReplyDeleteMagical realism kind of irks me :D It bothers my scientific self, even though I love pure fantasy & SF.
ReplyDeleteMagical realism is a tricky one. But it sounds like you've been willing to try a lot of new things. Thanks for co-hosting! @samanthabwriter from

I'm not too sure of what magical realism is, either, but I tend to think of it as real world with magical elements. I think I could write that, although the magical would probably overtake the real. Thanks for co-hosting today.
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing that you can write in so many different genre. I wish I were that versatile. But what I write is mostly speculative: fantasy or sci-fi. I need an element of unreality in my stories.
ReplyDeleteThank you for co-hosting Cathrina; You're amazing. You have so many and diverse interests. Wishing you great success. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteI also like so many genres. It's really hard to choose, because I also like to read almost anything (except horror). I did try magical realism too, and I think I may go back to it at some point. For me, I don't think I could do high fantasy, but I like fantasy with a lot of real world elements.
ReplyDeleteI like watching magical realism shows but I wouldn't want to write in that genre.
ReplyDeleteI love writing several different genres, but magical realisim is not one of my fortes for sure. It sounds like you have a pretty wide array of genres already!
ReplyDeleteI tend to avoid books with magic, witches, etc. I'm not sure I could write it. Thanks for co-hosting!
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting, Cathrina! I don't think I could pull off magical realism, either. That's wonderful you write in a variety of genres--keeps it interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for co-hosting today!
ReplyDeleteSad to hear that writing in magical realism didn't work out for you.
I've always had a hard time grasping what magical realism is. It used to be described so confusingly. Like how hard is it to describe the genre as magic blending alongside reality. Or a real world with magical elements. Described like this I can say I have two or more magical realism stories as WIPs.
What a fabulous description of magical realism Lidy - magic blending alongside reality.
DeleteHi Cathrina! That is an impressive list of genres you write in. Thank you for co-hosting the IWSG this month.
ReplyDeleteAnonymously Esther O'Neill, IWSG, East of the Sun, and still with no signal! Not surprised Google doesn't get this ! Still miss my first and only agent, who died far too soon - and encouraged me to write, always. Your genres so diverse and impressive... I'd struggle with magic realism, most of all because I'm too much of a realist for own good. Currently trying for HEA, for characters I've landed in far too much trouble...
ReplyDeleteI think magical realism is challenging. The author I love in that genre is Allende. She's brilliant.
