Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. March 3 question - Everyone has a favorite genre or genres to write. But what about your reading preferences? Do you read widely or only within the genre(s) you create stories for? What motivates your reading choice?
I write YA novels that have market appeal for both young adults and adults. Whatever a writer likes to pen, I believe it is essential they read, read, read books of their genre. But, I also believe in being well rounded and a writer should read many genres.
With that said, I love YA reads and that is my first go to. And, I don't stick primarily with YA, I enjoy a gambit of genres.
When I am writing or when I am reading, a book helps me to escape reality.
Reading tickles a persons imagination. A must for writer's.
Reading hones a writer's craft.
During the day, I lack the precious time to read, so my current read is always next to my bed. At night when I settle comfortably beneath my blankets, I take a moment to crack a book and read.

Hi, sadly I've read just few YA books! I prefer to read across genres and age groups as I write for children.

DeleteYoung adult is not my choice but I have read a lot of blogger buddies' books that were young adult.

DeleteI read widely as well -keeps the brain active. I tend to read at night as well. The only downside of that is I often read well into the night :)

DeleteI read widely, especially through DLP. Most of it is right after dinner though while my brain is still working.

DeleteA lot of much more mature readers enjoy YA. I've heard from many who are avid readers.

DeleteI agree with you--read your genre but read. It does make your writing more well-rounded than anythikng else.

ReplyDeleteI agree that it helps to read the genre we write, but reading other genres helps me understand different ways to plot and build characters, especially mystery versus sci-fi. I love reading fantasy and sci-fi, especially for MG and YA.
I love fantasy. That's my fave.

ReplyDeleteI don't read much YA. I usually can't click with the emotions and decisions present in most YA protagonists. Or maybe I just haven't met the right one yet...

Yay, any book that can offer us an escape is a great book. It also can give an author that extra inspiration, especially if it's out of their normal reading box.
