@TheIWSG #WritersSupport #WritingCommunity #amwriting #WritersLife #SupportGroup

Join Alex J. Cavanaugh and a multitude of writer's in this monthly hop to help support one another!

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter handle is @TheIWSG and hashtag is #IWSG.

January 6 question - Being a writer, when you're reading someone else's work, what stops you from finishing a book/throws you out of the story/frustrates you the most about other people's books?

Time is very important to me, and if I start to read a book that doesn't hold my interest during the first chapter, I will usually put it down and begin another book. Eventually, I will go back to the book that didn't interest me, and I will begin reading again. I like to give the story a chance to unfold. If it still frustrates me ~ the dialogue, the storyline, the plot, the characters, I will flip through the pages and read paragraphs to see if the story develops to my liking. I might not finish it. However, I have shelved a book for months or even a year, and then have gone back to it, and found that I enjoyed it. Perhaps, I just wasn't mentally prepared for that genre at that time in my life.

I know this will horrify some writer's and reader's, it is normal for me to read the ending of books. Because, like I said, time is precious, and if I despise the ending, I won't waste my time. Sometimes I am able to wait until I'm halfway through. However, if I absolutely love a book, I can't stand the suspense and have to read the ending. LOL!

  1. Cheater! That's too funny. There are books I wish I'd read the ending first so I could skip them.

  2. I used to skip to the end when I was a kid but I tend not to do that anymore. I put down a book I'm not enjoying too. Though, like you, sometimes I can pick it up later when I'm in a better frame of mind.

    1. Some books I don't finish and never go back. But others, I will try again, and sometimes enjoy them months later.

  3. Some books we're just not ready for at the time. However, I've read enough first three chapters to know when I am not going to finish or like it later.

    1. After 3 chapters, and it doesn't grab your attention, why bother.

  4. I've done that. It really depends on the book. Certain books hit me at different times as the right ones to read.

  5. I find I'm becoming more picky about books I read. So many are available these days that we have almost too many options, and not all good. I don't finish a lot of book. You're an end-reader! Yes, I'm horrified. LOL.

  6. If I read the ending, I stop reading the book because I know what's going to happen. So, I quit doing that since I was ruining too many stories for myself.

    1. I can't stop. But I do read the entire book, if I like it.

  7. Hi, Cathrina! Yes, I am horrified at your reading the ending of a book first ~ LOL! I never peek ahead! But if it works for you, more power to you! Happy reading this year!

  8. I have to admire your persistence. I'm not sure I'd be as patient. Happy New Year. Here's to finding some great books to read.
