What personal traits have you written into your character (s)?
In my book, Incense and Peppermints, I gave the main character many of my personal traits as a sixteen year old. (that I could remember..LOL)
I think it'd be difficult not to write or add in some of our personal traits, even unknowingly.
I guess it's hard not to write part of ourselves into our characters, probably sometimes subconsciously!Great quotes to read too.
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteI think whenever I give a character one of my personal traits, it's unintentional. Sometimes you just can't help it!
ReplyDeleteI believe so.
DeleteI agree with you that it's hard not to include our personality traits. But it's also fun to explore personalities that you're not.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do like to explore other personalities. That's fun.
DeleteThat’s hilarious! I think people just want to feel like someone is listening, even if their thoughts are irrelevant to the subject :) Happy IWSG day!
ReplyDeleteYou picked up a Christian book, dummy! What did you expect? Some people aren't too bright. I think it's awesome you put your beliefs into that series.
ReplyDeleteI did. Thanks Alex.
DeleteI think when you have a worldview/faith, it's hard to keep it out. Yes, we can sideline it or put it into the world-building aspect, but the reality is, it's going to be there in one way or another. Bravo to you for putting it in the main storyline! I've also had a few comments like that about my books, and I just want to take a big pointer and put it on the Christian label that's on every one of my books and sales sites ...
ReplyDeleteWay to go Cathrina!!!
Thanks Tyrean.
DeleteHi, Cathrina! Sounds fun to include your 16-year-old self in a character. I also have written religious characters with varying responses (some negative).
ReplyDeleteI did. And it was fun reminiscing...getting those 16 year old feeling percolating again.
DeleteI agree. Sometimes writers can't help but slip things about themselves into their stories and characters.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure some traits slipped into my characters, which I'm not aware of. As you said, the characters come from us. How strange someone would complain about the religious beliefs, but then people (even I) don't always pay 100% attention ;)
ReplyDeleteIt may have been recommended and they just cracked it open. ;/
ReplyDeleteAnna from elements of emaginette
That's a great angle on this question--imbuing a character with traits we remember having as a teen. That's quite a feat come to think of it. Good for you.
ReplyDeleteIt worked, I remembered that angst filled time.
DeleteCrazy that someone would complain that your book was too Christian when it's meant to be a Christian book.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteHow cool that your teen character was like you as a teen. I had to roll my eyes about the Christian comment. It was hardly a secret with those books! I don't see why people have to be so rude.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th to you and your family!
Happy 4th Julie!
DeleteHi Cathrina,
ReplyDeleteWhat a dolt! Leaving a stupid remark like that for you Christian based book. How fun that you can remember your teen self to use in a story. I guess we all remember our teens in some way. In my YA writing, I draw back on my teens and the teens I knew then. Times may change, but hormones don't. Lol
True!
DeleteDon't you love people who leave reviews like that? What search did he do to pull up your book and NOT realize it was in the Christian genre?
ReplyDeleteLove the quotes! *Sigh* You'll always get people who want to complain about something -- even if it's their own fault.
ReplyDeleteI love the Ursula Le Guin quote.
ReplyDeleteReviews like that will always happen. I don't think it damages the book.
I agree, it's difficult for characters to not have something in common with their writers, in some way. (Write what you know, and all that!) Very cool to see what pieces of yourself have ended up in your own writing!
ReplyDeleteAnd sorry about those reviewers for your Wickedly series. That's like someone hating on a romance book for having *gasp* a romance, or horror having death. Might be a good idea for them to see what genre a book is before reading it!
I love the reviews of my books that start off with I hate romance...and I'm like, then why did you get this book?! But oh well.
ReplyDeleteI don't quite understand atheists' aversion to things with religious beliefs. I will read books that are other religions or lack of religions than my own and it doesn't bother me.
