September 6 Question: Have you ever surprised yourself with your writing? For example, by trying a new genre you didn't think you'd be comfortable in??
I write Young Adult novels, paranormal thrillers, dystopian, to contemporary mysteries. Last year, I was asked to write a short story for an anthology. And given the topic of the anthology I decided to depart from my comfort zone and write a romance. I felt fairly awkward, yet in the long run, I believe it turned out somewhat respectable. In the meantime, that Anthology, which many of you know had all but sizzled into ashes.
I still have the story sitting on my computer. While it stews for a while, I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with it.
Anybody interested in managing and championing a new Anthology? LOL!!!

Oh, I'm sorry that anthology turned into such a mess. Good for you for trying something out of your comfort zone. I hope you will find another home for it soon. I've no doubt it's a great story!

DeleteI wanted to start an anthology but I didn't get much response a year ago, and then I had health issues ... so I put the project on the shelf for now. Maybe next year, if I can get loads of help.

DeleteYou could try Roane Publishing they have anthologies coming out regularly. Watch for the call and good luck when you submit. You'll love them. :-)

DeleteI haven't really stepped out of my comfort zone in terms of genres, but that's mostly because I love writing about paranormal and monsters too much. Anything else just bores me (I like to read other genres though.)

ReplyDeleteSorry about the anthology falling through, but at least it gave you a reason for trying something new. Even if you never write another romance ever again, the things you learn writing the first one will help all your future books.
